November 2014

At the beginning of November, Marc & Sam Treleaven, aided by Mum Tracey, organised our annual Treasure Hunt for the 2 Jags Chris Trophy. Meeting up in one of the industrial estates at Plympton, we had a great time finding many clues through the drive which took us through lanes we did not know, via the new tungsten mine at Hemerdon, stopping off at various locations for walkabouts, Sparkwell, Lee Moor village and the pub at Meavy. Cruelly, we did not have time to go in, but made our way to Burrator where the boys had set a small Gymkhana section, involving accurate (?) throwing and reversing, before we ended up at the ever welcoming Burrator Inn for lunch. The winners this year were Bob & Marcia in the Vitesse, closely followed by Colin & Karen in ‘Barbara Ann’, and Dan, Lee, Louise & Terry in the 1200 ‘AA’ estate. Bringing up the rear this year were Rob & Alice and your AOs. A great day, and thanks to Marc & Sam for organising.

It has been good to see so many new members joining the Club this year, and we hope that you are enjoying the benefits of membership. Remember that the Club’s valuable Agreed Value insurance only applies to members insured through one of the companies on the panel, and they offer a wide range of services sure to suit your needs. If you have not managed to come along to a Club meeting yet, we’d love to see you and can assure you of a very warm welcome.

At our November Club Night, our members decided that John and I should continue as Area Organisers for 2015, and approved the Club accounts too. We do enjoy what we do but more importantly hope that you, our Devon members, approve too. If there is anything that you would like to see organised, please do contact us as we are always happy to receive ideas.

In particular, we are hoping that it may be possible to start a sub group, meeting possibly in the Holsworthy area, for those members who cannot easily get to the meetings at the Star Inn. More news on this soon but how about contacting us if you would be interested in coming along to informal meetings in a different part of the county.

Back to the meeting in November, on a personal note I had a great night, when all the members there helped me celebrate my --- birthday. It was a good meeting, well attended as usual, but with the addition of members visiting from Australia – yes our fame has spread worldwide now. Wayne and Sue live in the Melbourne area and at the moment their car count is a Herald saloon, Herald convertible and a Vitesse. They had visited the Classic Car Show at the NEC before heading down to South Devon where Sue has family. Anyone fancy a Club visit to OZ??

Later in November, Claire Purser, a member of both TSSC and SOC, organised another inter Club Skittles match. This time it was at the Waie Inn at Zeal Monachorum and, although Maurice and Mary had only a mile or two to come, a lot of us met at Parke, Bovey Tracey for a drive up through Mortonhampstead and Bow to the venue. There were 33 people playing plus a couple sitting it out. Three teams, SOC, TSSC, and a combination of TR Register and Dolomite Club members. We had the use of two alleys, and after four ends, it was the Dolomite & TR team victorious, with the Stag Club second and, you have guessed by now, we again brought up the rear. However, Maurice was the top scorer with a massive 42, but unfortunately Bob got the wooden spoon this time. Leaving the venue we had a surprise, meeting up with Adrian (Pez) Perry, Hermione and their two small children. Adrian was a member a few years ago and he still has his Spitfire that they used for their wedding – some of our longer standing members will remember them. Claire has already booked the venue for 22 November 2015, so put it in your diaries now.
