Devon Area Report
March 2017

Back at the Claycutters Arms for our first Club Night of 2017. 3 Spitfires in the car park alongside Dan's 2.5pi. We welcomed two new members, Brian from Plymouth with a lovely TR4 and Rob with an equally nice 1500 Spitfire. Nigel's Spitfire improves every time we see it, this month with a refurbished dash complete with green LED panel lights - not spooky at all! Nigel has put a huge amount of effort into compiling a list of shows in the area, some of which we have not seen before and many of us look forward to attending.

Just to remind everyone, we will shortly be sending out our internal entry forms for Powderham (8/9 July) which is one of the few we send off a group entry for. We were delighted to welcome back Ted after a longish absence and to see Hugh & Alison with us. Our new 'home' at the Claycutters is proving very popular and we are looking forward to using the garden area in the lighter evenings.

The February run started with coffee at the South Devon Steam Railway at Buckfastleigh before a photos shoot and the run itself. Bob was able to bring his Vitesse along to the Railway but was unable to do the run. Despite the dire weather we have had, several Triumphs made the trip, our 13/60, Jackie's 13/60 estate, lan's Spitfire, Mark's Stag and Dan's 2.5pi. The run took in 30 miles of real Devon lanes around the villages of Staverton, Landscove and Uphempston before Totnes. The route then turned off the main road again, through back lanes of Harberton, on to Harbertonford and Bow Bridge. Passing the (in)famous Malsters Arms where TV chef Keith Floyd was in (sometimes) and on to Cornworthy where Peter H almost passed his door. Narrow lanes again to Dittisham where the views to Torbay and down the River Dart were spectacular, and on up the hill to our destination, the Sportsmans Inn. At lunchtime we were joined in
the car park by Peter's Mklll Spitfire. 23 of us for a great lunch before heading homewards to clean the cars!

COMING UP IN DEVON

On Sunday 5 March we will meet at the House of Marbles, Bovey Tracey for a run of roughly 25 miles round the reservoirs and lanes back to the Claycutters Arms for lunch. Meet at the House of Marbles by noon please or earlier if you want coffee and a browse. As usual, we do need to have numbers beforehand.

Wednesday 15 March is our monthly get together at th Claycutters from 7.30pm (earlier if you want to eat!)

Sunday 19 March - we have been invited to play SKITTLES again against the Stag Owners Club and the Dolomlte Club - this time at the Westward Inn, Lee Mill just off the A38 between Ivybridge and Plymouth. 11 am start.

Sunday 2 April we will celebrate Nigel's big birthday by meeting at Exeter Services for a run to Haynes lntemational Motor Museum at Sparkford. An early start for all - we need to leave the Services by 8.30 am!

Looking slightly further ahead, we have a joint lunch with North Devon area on Drive it Day - Sunday 23 April, when we have booked the Countryman Inn again at Sampford Courtenay near Okehampton and we are looking forward to joining up with members from North Devon. As with all our lunch meetings, we must have names at least a week before please. Another date for the Diary - North Devon have a run on Sunday May 21st to The King's Arms in Georgeham, which is run by TSSC Member and Vitesse owner Stephen Cave. North Devon

February Club Night saw the return of my Herald, back in action after a brief winter lay-up whilst it was converted to EFI. Apart from some local runs this was its longest journey from home it had done, not that the distance was an issue as it is going very well, just needs some fine tuning for the cold idling and it will be fully finished.

I pulled up at the car park to find Mike Hadley & Andy Luckhurst exchanging a triangular roof sign, with Mike being a former driving instructor and Andy just about to become one, Mike was creating some loft space by passing it on. Mike also brought up a Vitesse Fuel Tank from the south for me. The power of Facebook and the TSSC Area network was in full swing; I put out a plea for a Vitesse tank on the local area FB page the previous week, South Devon member Dan Chudleigh had one, so it was collected by Hugh Read, passed to Mike who then brought it up to the North - How good is that, who needs eBay to buy stuff!

Alan & Janet Brace were there already and food ordered! Alan now has his MK3 Spitfire back together after rebuilding a Single rail gearbox, this has been working well and he was pleased that it was now nice and quiet. Malcolm Huxtable arrived, not in his Spitfire as that has only just arrived back from the bodyshop after having a respray. It took a bit longer than expected as it needed two new door skins, one new front wing and wheel arch. I just hope it goes back together quicker than when he repainted his front suspension last year! The car looks lovely and we look forward to seeing it back on the road soon.

Simon Whenmouth arrived, also with news on his other Stag which had just been painted in Magenta after a coupie of years worth of remedial work.... nothing happens quickly in Devon. Still a bit more work left to do on this one, but its return is just a matter of a few weeks away now hopefully.

Geoff & Dawn Wheeler also came along, their first in a littlewhile as they'd been sunning themselves in Florida. Just as we thought everyone had turned up for the evening, 5 of the local TR Register members arrived along with an Alfa owning friend, so in the end it made for quite a crowd in our corner of the pub.

Everyone seems to be looking forward to the coming show season, particularly some not so distant Devon events. Drive it Day on April 23rd will see the North & South meeting at The Countryman Inn at Sampford Courtney. This is a repeat of an event last year that was very successful, around 50 people and 30ish cars, so we are expecting similar numbers again this year.

On 21 st May the North Devon area are doing a repeat of the run from Holsworthy up to The Kings Arms in Georgeham. This is a great pub, in a lovely location and even better it's run by Vitesse owner and TSSC member Stephen Cave.

Another North Devon member Rob Shaddick works at the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway, so we are looking to arrange a run to there a bit later in the year, more details to follow on that one. That's about it for another month.
